Former newsreader Carol Barnes has died in hospital, ITN said.
The 63-year old was admitted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton last weekend after reportedly suffering a stroke.
Her family had been keeping a vigil at her bedside in intensive care, hoping she might pull through.
A friend of the family, speaking before her death, had described the stroke as a "tremendous shock".
Barnes began her working life as a teacher, before joining ITN as a reporter in 1976 and going on to anchor all the broadcaster's main news programmes, including the flagship News at Ten bulletin for a number of years.
After initially leaving ITN, she rejoined the news team for the war in Iraq as one of the main presenters on the now-defunct ITV News Channel.
Barnes had a long relationship with former Government Minister Denis MacShane.
Their 24-year-old daughter Clare was killed in a skydiving accident in Australia in 2004.
In her latter years, she worked as a columnist on various magazines and also co-ran a media-training company.
She had not, however, given up TV work completely and last appeared on ITV in January, presenting "Saving Ed Mitchell" about her former ITN colleague.
Carol was my favourite newsreader and for me the very best at her job.
